"He will make you a star." Biggie was particularly concerned about money around that time because he became a father in August to T'yanna, his daughter, with high-school sweetheart, Jan. "Nah, stay with Puff," Tupac apparently said. After that, Tupac mentored Biggie whenever the two met up - at one point Biggie even asked if Tupac would become his manager. They ate, drank and smoked together, and Tupac, already a successful recording artist, gifted Biggie, then unknown outside New York, a bottle of Hennessy. Their encounter, detailed in Ben Westhoff's book, Original Gangstas, took place at a party held by an L.A. That same year, as he worked on music for his debut album, Biggie Smalls met Tupac for the first time. In June 1993, the label released The Notorious BIG's first single as a solo artist, "Party and Bullshit." Combs arranged a record deal for Biggie, but left the label soon after, having fallen out with his boss, Andre Harrell. This recording came to the attention of Sean "Puffy" Combs, an A&R executive and producer who worked for the leading urban label Uptown Records - he started there as an intern in 1990. He had no serious plans to pursue a career in music - "It was fun just hearing myself on tape over beats," he later said in an Arista Records biography - but the tape found its way to The Source magazine, who were so impressed that they profiled Biggie in their Unsigned Hype column in March 1992 from there, Biggie was invited to record with other unsigned rappers. After he got out of jail, he made a demo tape as Biggie Smalls - named after a gang leader from the 1975 movie Let's Do It Again also a nod to his childhood nickname. The year after that, he was charged with dealing cocaine in North Carolina and reportedly spent nine months in jail while waiting to make bail. The following year he was arrested for violating that probation. He received a five-year probationary sentence in 1989 after being arrested on weapons possession charges. Biggie stepped up the drug dealing after quitting school and was soon in trouble with the law. Voletta worked long hours and had no inkling of her son's activities. Biggie had excelled at English, but often played truant at Westinghouse and dropped out altogether in 1989 at age 17.Īcquiring the childhood nickname "Big" because of his plus-sized girth, he began selling drugs at 12, according to an interview he gave to the New York Times in 1994, working the streets near his mom's apartment on St. But Biggie subsequently transferred to the George Westinghouse Career and Technical Education High School alumni include the rappers DMX, Jay-Z and Busta Rhymes. Early LifeĬhristopher George Latore Wallace was born on May 21, 1972, in Brooklyn, New York. In this regard, he was similar to Tupac Shakur, his one-time friend turned bitter rival - a contest that spiraled horrifyingly out of control leaving neither man alive to tell the tale. He styled himself as a gangster and although he was no angel, in reality he was more of a performer than a hardened criminal. With his clear, powerful baritone, effortless flow on the mic and willingness to address the vulnerability, as well as the harshness, of the hustler lifestyle, Smalls swung the spotlight back towards New York and his label home, Bad Boy Records. Smalls was from New York and had almost single-handedly reinvented East Coast hip hop - overtaken in the early 1990s by the West Coast "g-funk" sound of Dr. He was 24 years old when he was gunned down in 1997 in Los Angeles, a murder that has never been solved. With Netflix, you don’t even know what’s on there but HBO as a brand does maintain its integrity to a degree. MM: Yeah, because you go on there and they have a handful of things. NC: When you’re watching something on HBO it really does feel like an event. I think that most of my audience or people who would engage with what I do are HBO viewers, so for a number of reasons it was a tremendously exciting thing to have an HBO hour I got tremendous support from HBO, and they curate their content, and there are great shows on there. It was almost like a childhood bucket list thing to do an HBO special. It meant something and so I was honored in some weird way. HBO, when I was coming up, was not unlike a Letterman slot. Whatever the algorithm honors is who gets the big cash and who is put in a position to do more and more specials no matter the quality. I did two or three specials for Netflix and within a week it becomes difficult to find on the platform. Despite what anybody says, I think the Netflix model has done more damage than good in terms of quality in stand up in a way that there are many things on there that you can’t find. Because of that, does this stand up feel different? For so long, having a comedy special on HBO meant you’ve made it. What’s the alternative? To have people say it’s terrible, and it really made me sad. Niki Cruz: It feels weird to say because of the nature of the stand up, but I enjoyed From Bleak to Dark. Over time that goes away, and you’ve reached a level of comfortability up there.” Photograph by Oluwaseye Olusa/HBOĪwards Radar sat down with Marc Maron over zoom to talk about what it’s like to have a special on HBO, his process of developing From Bleak to Dark and balancing his multi-hyphenate career. It was shallow in thinking I’m the angry comic, but really it was about hiding something-fear primarily. “I have grown okay with sort of profound vulnerability up there.” Said Maron. There’s no corner Maron doesn’t explore in the HBO special from his grief over the sudden death of his girlfriend and director Lynn Shelton to talking about anti-woke comics, and his renewed relationship with his father, Maron is wide open, and he might be at his funniest because of it. He’s recently had a few big profiled comedy specials, but his most personal special, From Bleak to Dark, breaks new ground. Then there’s the large listening audience of his podcast and the way he effortlessly connects with WTFers on social media-he feels accessible.īefore his podcast, in the 90s and early aughts, Marc Maron was a stand-up comic, appearing on the late night circuit, being a regular at The Comedy Store, and experiencing the ebbs and flows of that life. His interviews with guests on his WTF podcast are often insightful and cut through the artifice into profound, more meaningful conversations with some of the biggest names in pop culture and Hollywood. And no, Joe Rogan does not make our list. One of the most engaging qualities about Marc Maron is his vulnerability and his ability to connect with someone (we saw that when he spoke to Joey here last year). From the chainsaw-fisted ogre that fires a grenade launcher at you, to the blood encrusted Shambler that just Hulk smashes its way through everything to get to you, each of Quake’s encounters can feel genuinely terrifying.Īdditionally, when you’re not spending your time ripping and tearing (sorry) through Quake’s gallery of nihilistic foes, you’ll be attempting to dodge the many, many traps that Quake throws at you. Per level, there are far fewer enemies to contend with in Quake, but yet, the enemies you do tangle with are resolutely challenging. Other differences between Quake and DOOM also abound. Sure enough, Quake perhaps does overindulge in brown and greens when it comes to colour, but ultimately, Quake’s dark worlds are a joy to explore and blast through thanks to their heady design. Sure enough, all of this might seem trite to folks who take this sort of movement for granted and have long been weaned on more current shooters, but for the time Quake was absolutely revolutionary and even today, the movement and hyper-kinetic combat feels like it hasn’t lost a step.Įlsewhere, another point of significant distinction between Quake and DOOM is that the former eschews the full-tilt satanic themes for a more broader range of grim themes, taking in influences from Lovecraft and others that results in towering cathedrals, foreboding stone keeps and ruined castles that all feel a world away from the usual destroyed bases and hellscapes that characterised DOOM. Players could now jump off of ledges and aim at all angles with the sort of grace that just wasn’t possible previously. Indeed, this evolved level design found its way into Quake’s excellent split-screen and online multiplayer mode too, where tight corridors, chambers rich with verticality and cunning traps all combined to make Quake’s deathmatch feel like a furiously visceral dervish interlaced with a level of skill like nothing I had ever played before.Īnother boon of Quake’s more complex level design and full 3D graphics engine was that combat felt much more satisfyingly kinetic than anything else. Timeless Level Design That Defined A Genreĭevelopers id Software knew just what to do with the much more powerful toolset at their disposal too – fashioning fiendishly creative levels stuffed full of secrets and traps in a way that DOOM could only dream of. Much more than just a generational leap in geometric complexity, texture detail and lighting, Quake’s embrace of a fully 3D game engine allows players to explore every level completely, as the newfound ability to completely look up and down feels immensely freeing after the head-locked shenanigans of DOOM, while the more sophisticated game engine also allows for far more complex level design to boot. Arguably the biggest change that Quake brings over DOOM is the graphics engine. Relax and enjoy the turquoise waters of the Gulf or walk along the shoreline. In most rooms, you’ll need at least three meters (ten feet) of space to cast a 100-inch display. These projectors give the most cinematic of images, with naturalistic color, but often don’t seem quite so sharp as DLP. If you specialize in monochrome, they may not be the best choice.ģLCD projectors use a trio of aligned LCD panels. However, that colour wheel can cause an artifact known as rainbow fringing (particularly on cheaper models), where colour flashes can be seen in areas of high contrast. They tend to be competitively priced and because they use a single device, can deliver very sharp pictures. DLP models use a digital micromirror device (DMD) allied to a spinning colour wheel to create images. There are two key projection technologies. The technology is more pricey, though is generally used in top-range, home cinema models. LED lighting is gaining popularity within the projector market, especially in portable models, given how compact LEDs can be – note that, while LED models will last for much longer than UHP ones, though, brightness output tends to be comparatively lower.īigger spenders should consider the laser projectors in this guide, as they offer more vivid and consistent colour over a longer period of time (over 20,000 hours). UHP lamps are the closest thing to a standard lighting system for projectors, given their high brightness capability, but lamps only last a few thousand hours, and tend to degrade gradually over time, affecting the colour output. There are several lighting technologies that can be used to power a projector. Bluetooth connectivity in some models will allow you to display photos from smartphones, tablets, and other source devices through your projection too. Many projectors will contain USB ports to plug in a flash drive, with basic smart platforms to help navigate folders containing photos and other files. Of course! Projectors are like any kind of display technology, in that any of its inputs or connectivity options can be used to play photos or videos from compatible devices. In this guide we’ll run you through our favorite picks at a variety of prices and use cases, so you can find the best projector for you, whatever it is you’re after. Simply put, the best projectors offer big and bright images that you’d be smart to invest in, especially given the additional smart features, streaming apps, and connectivity options found in the top models out there.
